The Grateful Dead formed in Palo Alto, California in 1965. Their musical style is a fusion of country, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, rock, improvisational jazz, psychedelic, and space rock, and their live performances feature long instrumental jams. Their enthusiastic fans were known as "Deadheads". Rolling Stone magazine ranked them #57 on its "Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time" list, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Guitarist and vocalist Jerry Garcia was ranked #13 in 2003 and #46 in the 2011 edition of Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. The Grateful Dead, despite being largely immune to the charts, have always been one of the top two acts in the U.S. in terms of annual concert revenue. Although not well known in Japan, the band is recognized as one of America's most legendary bands in its home country of the United States, and has sold over 35 million albums worldwide.
